Jekyll Island, Georgia - Early. I do a lot of
work on Jekyll Island, and was able to drag my
rear out of bed on this fine Sunday morning to
visit Driftwood Beach. Natural erosion is
taking away this part of the north end of the
island. Along with the sand, these ancient oaks
are slowly being reclaimed by the sea. There
are huge skeletons of once mighty live oaks in
the tidal area, laying sideways or still
standing, slowly decaying with the passing
tides. This tree will remain for many more
years, but hurricanes or other angry sea events
will eventually take this one too. For now, it
is a witness to the passing of time - battered
and bent, but beautiful and still thriving in
the harshest of conditions.
